SEIU workers union and NAACP seek answers about proposed merger with Franciscan Health Alliance

A town hall meeting co-hosted by SEIU union representatives of workers of The Methodist Hospitals will be held at Gary’s Ivy Tech Community College, 1440 E. 35th Avenue.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, State Rep. Charlie Brown, State Sen. Eddie Melton and Methodist Hospitals CEO Raymond Grady will participate in the panel discussion with other leaders at 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 31st.

The forum is co-sponsored by the Gary Branch NAACP and the A. Phillip Randolph Institute.

The subject of the meeting is the potential merger of Methodist Hospitals and the Franciscan Health Alliance, a group of hospitals owned by the Catholic Church.

Also on the panel will be SEIU Healthcare Indiana President Greg Kelley and Gary Branch NAACP President Steve Mays. SEIU represents 600 members at the two Methodist locations in Gary and Merrillville.

The NAACP said residents have complained to the civil rights group that there has been no transparency in the discussions and little information given to the community.

The meeting will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room at Ivy Tech.
