Methodist Hospitals and its physicians have established a Spine Care Center dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of spine-related issues. The Spine Care Center, located at Methodist's Southlake campus, is an innovative, multi-disciplinary collaboration of physicians and other clinicians specializing in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and physical therapy.
"Our physicians are well known for their expertise in the treatment of spinal disorders," said Methodist Hospitals’ CEO Ian McFadden. "We now have a dedicated program to provide the highest quality care to patients suffering from spine-related issues. And, we are able to provide the care in an efficient and patient-friendly manner"
A cornerstone of the Spine Care Center is Priority Consult, a pioneering patient management system designed to improve the patient experience and enhance productivity for spine care providers. The Priority Consult process utilizes digital technology to review a patient's medical history and diagnostic test results to help direct patients to the most appropriate care, from non-surgical to surgical treatments.
"Priority Consult was developed because nearly 80% of spine patients are treated without surgical intervention," said Elian Shepherd, MD, Spine Care Center Medical Director. "By organizing the patient's medical history, clinical status and any completed tests and imaging in the early stage of evaluation, our spine care team can determine the most appropriate course of treatment - without the patient coming into the center - and recommend the appropriate treatment."
Institutions across the country with similar programs have directed approximately 65 percent of their patients to non-surgical treatment prior to the patient's initial appointment. Of that number, approximately 75 percent experienced a resolution of symptoms without ever needing to see a surgeon. These patients avoided the time and expense of an unnecessary appointment with a specialist while embarking on their care path much more rapidly.
Care coordinators help educate the patient and assist with coordinating treatment, pain management or therapy. In addition, care coordinators provide a vital communication link back to the referring physician, who is regularly updated regarding the status of the patients referred to Methodist Hospitals Spine Care Center.
Methodist Hospitals Spine Care Center, located at the Center for Advanced Clinical Studies, 200 E. 89th Ave., Merrillville, IN 46410, features a state of the art facility, innovative ancillary services and easy access to superior spine care.
