Methodist Hospitals is changing the way healthcare is delivered in Northwest Indiana. To accomplish that, the hospital’s goal is to create the most advanced healthcare environment in Northwest Indiana so local families will never have to leave the region to get the very best care.
Methodist Hospitals is pursuing its goal through a number of initiatives.
First, Methodist is building a multi-specialty program of minimally invasive options using three-dimensional and navigation technologies for a wide range of complex medical treatments and surgical procedures.
Within the last 18 months, Methodist has introduced a several state-of-the-art technologies to Northwest Indiana, including electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy for the early diagnosis of lung cancer; computer-assisted navigation surgery suites for orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, neurosurgery and urology; three-dimensional mammography; and the latest in robotic surgery.
These new technologies have been added to Methodist Hospitals’ options for treatment because they improve the quality of life for their patients.
The hospital has committed approximately $35 million to new technology, facility enhancements, and programs to improve patient safety, comfort and quality of care.
Methodist President and CEO Ian McFadden says, “We anticipate new technologies will continue to be introduced at an ever-increasing pace which, together with our medical staff, we will continue to adopt with the goal of helping our physicians, and skilled surgeons, to make significant improvements in their patients’ outcomes and quality of life.”
Methodist Hospitals is also playing a leadership role in physician integration and the development of new health care access models.
This means providing access at all levels—from primary care to complex, subspecialty tertiary care, and they have partnerships with other organizations such as the Federally Qualified Health Care centers to provide access to everyone.
The hospital is also building a 21st Century multispecialty physician group, Methodist Physician Group, which includes a broad referral network of primary care physicians, and a deep roster of specialists in fields such as cardiology, oncology, neuroscience and orthopedics.
Leadership in the adoption of health information technology is also helping to fuel this integration. Methodist was one of only 7% of US hospitals to achieve stage one of “Meaningful Use” in 2011.
Methodist was the first Northwest Indiana hospital in the region to implement the Epic EMR hospital-wide and the first to implement Computerized Order Entry for physicians. All Methodist Physician Group physicians have also implemented Epic in their offices providing full integration of physician and hospital information.
Additionally, Methodist Hospitals has expanded its commitment to academic medicine via residency programs, partnerships with major universities and pursuit of trauma center status.
