MERRILLVILLE | The rewarding experience from the physically demanding three-day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer is what motivates Lisa Loughridge to participate in her third such event.

"You're part of something bigger than yourself," Loughridge said of the walk.

The 35-year-old Merrillville resident and her sister Lauren Loughridge, 22, of Hammond, are training to walk in the Chicago 3-Day from Aug. 10 to 12. The event raises money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer funds.

The sisters are working together to raise the $2,200 needed to participate, and the duo walks several miles a week to prepare for the journey.

Lisa Loughridge has experience in the event as she walked in 2002 and 2005, while Lauren Loughridge plans to participate for the first time in August.

"She's really enthusiastic about it," Lisa Loughridge said of her sister's participation in the event.

Lisa Loughridge said she initially became involved in the event as a way to prove she had the strength and stamina to accomplish the fete.

Now, she said, walking with cancer survivors and other participants while raising awareness for the disease has provided her with a touching experience that keeps her coming back.

"It gets in your blood," Lisa Loughridge said.

She said she received additional motivation to participate in the event as two of her relatives have been diagnosed with breast cancer and now are in remission.
