Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) turns 20!
Editors Note: A 20 year anniversary celebration is being held at
Methodist Northlake Campus in the South Pavillion Auditorium at 1:00 pm
on Thursday, April 3 at 1 pm. Claude Watts will speak and physicians and
staff will be honored for their committment and dedication. Media is
invited to attend, please contact me if you plan on attending.
Twenty years, thousands of babies and Press Ganey Satisfaction scores
consistently in the 98th and 99th percentile give Methodist Hospitals
Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) more than enough reasons to
celebrate. On Thursday, April 3, Methodist Hospitals NICU celebrates its
20th anniversary!
Many of the patients at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are
small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Thanks to advances in
medicine over the years and the skill and experience of the staff, these
tiny patients have a much higher chance at going home healthy and happy.
Dr. Anthony Iwuagwu, an Obstetrician, says much of the credit is due to
the wonderful nursing staff and NICU facility at Methodist. “We are
very lucky to have such an experienced staff and a facility of this
quality here.” The NICU is also equipped with the only transport team
in Northwest Indiana that will bring babies from non-network hospitals
such as: St. Mary’s and St. Katherine’s to Methodist.
Dr. Dizon and Dr. Sridhar began the NICU 20 years ago. They will be
honored at the anniversary celebration on Thursday. The team at the NICU
consists of 4 Neonatologists; Dr. Agarwal, Dr. Dizon, Dr, Sridhar, and
Dr. Tareen, neonatology nurse practitioners, nurses, speech therapist,
physical therapist and respiratory therapist.
Most of the nurses at the NICU have over 10 years of experience; a few
have been here since it first opened. They have learned that taking care
of a baby requires taking care of the entire family. “The parents are
very scared and anxious when their babies get brought here, so we help
the parents cope and allow them to be as much a part of their babies
growing process as possible,” Ellen Maravilla, RN, stated as she
comforted one of the tiny patients. “The parents do not forget you. I
have run into people years later at the mall or a restaurant and they
will still come up to me and tell me what a wonderful experience they
had while they were here.”
