Methodist Hospitals Hosts First Obesity Symposium
Methodist Hospitals in Northwest Indiana is holding its first Obesity
Symposium on Saturday, February 23 at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville,
Indiana. The objective of the symposium is to provide professional staff
in the community with up to date information to assist in combating
obesity in Indiana.
Since the mid-seventies, the obesity rate in the US has increased
sharply; today 34 percent of adults aged 20 and over are obese. The
direct and indirect costs of obesity in America are more than $117
billion per year. According to recent reports, Indiana has the 9th
highest level of adult obesity in the nation at 28.6 percent.
The symposium will feature leading authorities in bariatric medicine
and related fields presenting:
- The incidence of obesity and the current and future costs of
obesity and obesity related illnesses in Indiana and the United States
- Metabolic syndrome, including the diagnosis, associated
conditions and treatment options
- Co-morbidities of obesity, the importance of early diagnosis and
medical management
- The realities and implications of pediatric obesity and how the
medical community can intervene to change this ominous path
- The role of psychology in obesity and its treatment
- Diet, exercise and medical weight loss strategies as they
pertain to the obese and morbidly obese patient
- Surgical weight loss options: who is a candidate, the success
rate, potential complications and resolution of co-morbidities
- The impact of surgery on Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic syndrome
Methodist Hospitals has made an extended commitment to the health of
