Methodist Hospitals Hosts First Obesity Symposium Methodist Hospitals in Northwest Indiana is holding its first Obesity Symposium on Saturday, February 23 at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville, Indiana. The objective of the symposium is to provide professional staff in the community with up to date information to assist in combating obesity in Indiana. Since the mid-seventies, the obesity rate in the US has increased sharply; today 34 percent of adults aged 20 and over are obese. The direct and indirect costs of obesity in America are more than $117 billion per year. According to recent reports, Indiana has the 9th highest level of adult obesity in the nation at 28.6 percent.
