Methodist offers free stroke screenings and presentation

Methodist Hospitals is offering a free Stroke Awareness Community Seminar on Thursday, May 11, 2006, in honor of May as National Stroke Awareness Month. The event runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Methodist Hospitals Center for Advanced Clinical Studies, 200 E. 89th Ave., Merrillville.

Individualized stroke risk assessments will be performed by registered nurses who specialize in stroke care. The assessment includes identification of hereditary and lifestyle risks, blood pressure screening, weight and body mass index calculations and a carotid bruit screening, which is used to measure blood circulation in the neck arteries. Those identified as “high risk” will receive discount coupons for more advanced stroke risk screenings including ultrasounds for carotid artery, abdominal aorta and peripheral artery disease.

Eugene Tanquilut, D.O., Vascular/Endovascular Surgeon will discuss new technology for stroke screenings and the available treatment options for those identified as “high risk.” Mridula Prasad, M.D., Neurology will discuss the risk factors and warning signs of stroke. American Heart Association Stroke Victors Weis Robinson and Angie Berg will also be on hand to share their experiences.

Please register in advance by calling 1-888-909-DOCS (3627).
