Various arts groups, civic organizations, representatives from community organizations and others will take part in World Civility Day activities on Thursday.
Events presented during World Civility Day include workshops at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond and a gala dinner at Avalon Manor in Merrillville.
The workshops and dinner are expected to draw attendees from not only Northwest Indiana but from 14 states and six nations.
Community Civility Counts, which is offering World Civility Day events, is a partnership between the Gary Chamber of Commerce and The Times Media Co.
Chuck Hughes, executive director of the Gary Chamber of Commerce, said it’s an honor to have the South Shore Dance Alliance and Will Miller & The Jazz Gang as performers at the gala event.
“South Shore Dance Alliance has been vital for years in the lives of young people,” Hughes said. South Shore Dance Alliance, established in 2002 by Larry Brewer, offers a pre-professional performance training program.
Will Miller and The Jazz Gang, Hughes said, also wanted to be a part of the events of the day as its members believe the civility themes are extremely important.
Hughes mentioned the Civility Counts campaign has really taken off. That’s also evident in the growth of the World Civility Day events.
“In a year’s time, we’ve gone from a one-day evening event to a whole day of activities,” Hughes said, mentioning the special workshops.
“We’ll be talking about civility in the workplace, civility in the classroom and anti-bullying,” he said.
Hughes said he’s happy to see how the messages of Community Civility Counts has spread beyond the Region.
“To think this was an initiative started in Northwest Indiana. People are aware of civility,” he said.
Along with the Gary Chamber of Commerce and The Times Media Co., other sponsors of World Civility Day include Methodist Hospitals, AT&T Indiana, National Civility Center, Civility Experts, Propriety Publishing, Legacy Foundation, Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce, Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors, Shared Ethics Advisory Commission, Edgewater Systems, Gary Housing Authority, Hammond Housing Authority, Lake Area United Way and Lake County Bar Association.
