Central Park Plaza Ice Rink to open
The Central Park Plaza Ice Rink will open to the public at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at 55 Napoleon St., Valparaiso. In addition to open skate, the rink will offer ice skating and hockey lessons, open hockey time, and rink rental for private events, fundraisers and birthday parties. Holiday food gift programs
The Porter County Extension Service will present a Fabulous Food Gifts class at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 at Portage Library, 2665 Irving St.. Annetta Jones, Health and Human Sciences educator with Porter County Extension Service, will impart tips and recipes for making simple and low-cost food gifts. The programs are free. The Neuroscience Institute at Methodist Hospitals has announced its schedule of support groups and classes. Health insurance information session
The hospitals of Community Healthcare System will host Navigating the Marketplace, free information sessions to help community members explore options and choose a health insurance plan to fit their needs and budget. The next session will be at 5 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 16, Portage Public Library, 2670 Lois St., Portage. Licensed certified Indiana Navigators will be on hand to answer questions and schedule appointments to assist with the application process. Open enrollment is from Nov. 1 to Jan. 31, 2017. Dinner served at Ivy Tech
Students in the hospitality program at Ivy Tech Community College are cooking meals for the public, students, staff and families Nov. 17, and Dec. 1 and 8 in the restaurant on campus, 410 E. Breakfast to benefit cancer patients
Little Red Door Cancer Agency will host the 9th Annual Face of Hope Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 17 in the Expo Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis. Proceeds will go to providing transportation to and from cancer treatment, support services, medical supplies and nutritional supplements for cancer patients in central Indiana. ARTability Show and Auction
Opportunity Enterprises will host the 10th Annual ARTability Show and Auction from 6-8:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Duesenberg Community Room at Valparaiso University’s Christopher Center Library, 1410 Chapel Drive, Valparaiso. Canvas artwork will be sold by silent auction. Pre-priced ceramic pieces and artisan glassware also will be available for purchase independent of the auction. Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will host a night of music and singing from 7:30-9 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Visitor Center, 1215 N. Indiana 49, Porter. Winter Lights Night Festival
Porter County Parks and Recreation will kick off their annual lights display with the Winter Lights Night Festival from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 19 at Sunset Hill Farm Park, 775 Meridian Road, Valparaiso. The evening will feature caroling, crafts, visits with Santa, cookie decorating, a gingerbread house contest, wagon rides and fireworks. Cost is $5 per car. Holidaze Craft Fair
The Holidaze Sell-A-Bration Arts and Crafts show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 19 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 Division Road, Valparaiso. The fair will feature vendors from six states, food, door prizes and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the Toys for Tots program. Open registration for winter basketball leagues
Registration for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Winter Basketball Leagues is underway through Dec. 9. Food pantry donation program
The Ross Township Food Pantry is partnering with Meijer to provide food for local families in need through the Simply Give program. Through Dec. 31, $10 donation cards can be purchased at the Merrillville Meijer, 611 Lincoln Highway. For each $10 donation, Meijer will match it with another $10. Personal care and clothing collection
United Way Retired and Senior Volunteer program of Northwest Indiana will be collecting personal care items through January 1, and handmade winter clothing for the upcoming holiday season until Thanksgiving.
