CROWN POINT — Methodist Hospitals recently launched a new immediate care center, one of three it plans to open in the Region in the near future.

Methodist CareFirst, 1275 E. North Ave. in Crown Point, will be able to treat common illnesses and minor injuries, such as colds, flu, respiratory and urinary tract infections, fractures, sprains and strains, earaches, diarrhea and food poisoning. Lab tests and X-rays also will be available. The center is on located on the campus of the Crown Point Sportsplex.

The new facility is indicative of a larger trend in medicine, in part brought on by the federal Affordable Care Act, away from high-cost, inpatient treatment to more cost-efficient outpatient care. The investment also would seem to back up the health system’s position that it is financially strong even as it explores partnerships with other hospitals. Additional CareFirst locations are set to open soon in Merrillville and Gary. Services in Crown Point are expected to expand to include physical therapy and sports medicine, as well as house physician offices.

CareFirst is open evenings and weekends to provide a cheaper alternative to the emergency room. The facility can be reached at (219) 663-2793.
