Walgreens, The Methodist Hospitals return for annual health fair

The City of Gary and The Methodist Hospitals will partner with the Danielle Ashley Group in presenting the 3rd Annual First Ladies Health Day. The First Ladies Health Day event will offer Gary residents free life-saving health screenings on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Center Plaza. The First Ladies Health Day is sponsored by Walgreens.

This year’s First Ladies Health Day is a Health & Harmony Fair that will present an opportunity for women and men to receive screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, breast cancer, PSA, stroke, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and other illnesses that are disproportionately high in African American communities. Walgreens Pharmacists will be on hand to provide flu shots and medicine consultations.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson stated, “We are happy to partner with the Methodist Hospitals, Walgreens and the Danielle Ashley Group in hosting this Health & Harmony Fair. We want to empower attendees to declare war on chronic and often deadly illnesses that plague our communities. We invite Gary residents to come out on October 15th and take advantage of these health tests that could save a life.”

While Methodist Hospitals will be the major health provider at the fair, the event will host medical volunteers from various health agencies including the City of Gary, Gary Health Department, Community HealthNet, Lake County Minority Health Coalition and Edgewater Behavioral Health Services to provide the free tests and/or counseling and others.

The day will also includeinspiring stories of healthy living, presentations from medical experts, refreshments and a gospel showcase from choirs of local churches.

Dozens of Gary churches and ministries are helping to host the event.
