GARY — Little Robin Grant Johnson pumped his fist in the air from his bassinet Friday afternoon as if to tell his mom everything would be OK.

“He’d give a thumbs up during the ultrasound,” said mom Robyn Johnson, of Gary.

Little Robin was the first baby born in Lake County in 2016. He came into the world at 3:52 a.m. Friday weighing 6 pounds 11.9 ounces at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus.

Robin, also the son of Javan Singleton, was spending his first day in the neonatal unit of the hospital. He’s fighting an infection and has respiratory issues, said his mom.

Still, the dark-haired infant, would open his eyes, kick his feet and raise his arms as his mom stroked his head.

Johnson, an accountant, said Robin was born about a week early. She wasn’t sure it was his time when she began having contractions Thursday, but soon learned the baby was headed into her world. She headed to the hospital about 8 p.m.

“Everybody is waiting to spoil him,” Johnson said of her first child. He’s got grandparents, aunts and plenty of cousins. “The last baby in the family just turned 10.”

“I’m just hoping everything would be OK. He even cried a little bit and I told him no crying, we got a long road ahead of us,” said Johnson.

Being the first baby born in the new year makes the birth a special memory, she said.

“But he will always be special,” Johnson added.
