Quality Medical Care Without the Use of Blood Transfusions.
Bloodless Medicine and Surgery is revolutionizing the health care field today. Complex surgeries are being performed without the use of blood transfusions, a feat once thought impossible or irresponsible.
Methodist Hospitals Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, the first in Northwest Indiana, utilizes advanced medical technologies and knowledgeable staff to provide quality care without using donor blood.
Why Bloodless Medicine?
Some people who seek bloodless medicine programs have concerns about the safety of donor blood; others have religious beliefs that do not permit transfusions.
Medical Staff and Nurse Expertise
The Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery is directed by a board certified hematologist (blood specialist). The doctors, nurse and technologists are specialized to care for patients while avoiding the use of donated blood.
Medical Advancements in Technology and Care
To help give the highest quality care to our bloodless medicine patients, the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery uses state-of –the-art technical support. Advanced technology and knowledgeable staff help the patients avoid blood transfusions by:
- Reducing Blood Loss
- Building up the patient’s own blood
- Giving patients back their own blood without transfusions
The technologies used the Methodist Hospitals Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery include:
Cell Saver: A machine that continually circulates the patients’ own blood during surgery by collecting lost blood, cleaning it and returning it to the patient.
Electrocautery: Heat is used to “seal” incisions during surgery to stop bleeding.
Medications: Various colony-stimulating advanced biotech products promote the creation of more red and white blood cells and platelets in the blood.
Anesthetic Techniques: Advanced Anesthesia techniques are used during surgery to slow blood loss.
Hyperbaric Oxygen: A special chamber that speeds up slow healing wounds by benefiting from an oxygen-enriched bloodstream.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Surgery is done through a very small incision.
Stereotactic Surgery: Surgery, such as Gamma Knife Surgery, that uses a special instrument to diagnose or remove brain tumors.
Lithotripsy: Ultrasonic waves used to disintegrate kidney stones.
