April Brown, of Gary, directs big hearted helpers at The Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville and Northlake Campus in Gary.
Brown is coordinator for volunteer services, responsible for recruiting, training and retaining volunteers ranging from 16 to 90-plus years of age. "Any volunteer that comes in the doors starts here," she said.
Brown interviews, screens and places volunteers based on skills, abilities and areas of interest. Volunteers receive the same training as hospital employees -- safety compliance, policy and procedure, regulations, model of care and conduct -- and they receive a tour of the facility.
Volunteer opportunities range from working the front desk and greeting guests to helping patients, delivering to patient rooms and transporting patients.
"There is a plethora of things they can do based on their skills set," she added.
"After being at Methodist for 25 years, I can say it's a great place to work. One reason it's a good place to work is the individuals I work with on a daily basis. We are a family," she said.
"The people here are committed to the community and providing quality care. I like to see patients get the best care possible and the people that work at the hospital do, too," Brown said.
Being active in the community is also important to Brown. She is a mentor for the John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club in Gary, involved with the Lake County Minority Coalition and very active at her church, Logan Park Assembly of Christ in Gary.
