Empowered Nurses: Methodist Hospitals Shared Governance Councils

Methodist Hospitals has implemented Shared Governance, a professional practice model that promotes nursing empowerment and shared decision-making by making staff nurses accountable for decisions that impact policies, procedures, and processes at the point of care.

There is no question that Shared Governance is an effective technique for empowering nurses and improving patient outcomes. It helps frontline clinicians to be involved in decision-making about issues that impact on them and the services they deliver. Shared Governance also promotes a culture fostering transparent review of work practices and support for personal and professional development with a focus on evidence-based patient outcomes.
