The Methodist Hospitals Family Medicine Residency Program

The Future of Health Care is Family Practice -The Future of Family Practice is Here

Residency Program Philosophy

In today's healthcare world, the family physician is regarded as the "gate-keeper". The philosophy of our Family Medicine Residency Program is to prepare physicians to practice in this new role. Our physicians are trained to clearly identify their role in providing comprehensive healthcare to the family and function as the leader of the healthcare team. It is our intent to prepare physicians who will improve the quality of healthcare, the healthcare delivery system, and access to healthcare delivery for individuals and their families.

Through our program, we strive to provide the best possible patient care through the delivery of services that provide the best possible outcome feasible. This is achieved through the balance of "high-tech" and "high-touch" humanistic care. The Family Medicine Residency Program is committed to the provision of care that is safe, timely, specific, and appropriate to each patient's needs. At the same time being cost-efficient, while not being governed by cost. Our residents are trained to be highly competent and caring physicians that collaborate with other healthcare professionals as an inter-disciplinary team.

Family Practice needs physicians who are well-prepared to maintain and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the best in modern medical practice, in a rapidly changing healthcare world. To this end, the program assists the resident in a regularly systematic program of life long learning.

Community leadership is an integral part of improving the healthcare of the community, as a whole. We believe that the Family Practice physician must assume not only a leadership role in the medical community, but in the community which he now serves and will continue to serve upon the completion of the program.

Director's Philosophy

The residency program is the first step to independent practice. In the present day of managed care, the family physician (besides being a physician) must also be able to understand the business side of medicine. Our residents get their outpatient training at The Tatum Health Center.  The center serves as a group practice and as the residency site. This way the residents learn the fundamentals of medical practice and at the same time, the business aspects. The members of the group practice also serve as preceptors in the program. While in the outpatient setting we strongly emphasize health maintenance and preventive care.

Being also the director for the Emergency Department,  we have a strong push for training our residents in acute care. Our residents are encouraged to take the different life support courses - ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). Being the only residency program in our hospital,  we encourage the residents to become very procedural in outlook.

-Dr. David Ross
