MERRILLVILLE | Methodist Hospitals is hosting a free event to help breast cancer survivors welcome spring and the new life they have grasped.
Spring Spa Day, made possible through the efforts of the oncology services department at Methodist Hospitals and support from the Pink Ribbon Society, provides patients and survivors an opportunity to be educated and pampered.
After its successful introduction last year, Spring Spa Day will return from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Methodist Hospitals’ Center for Advanced Clinical Studies, 200 E. 89th Ave. Admission is free, but reservations are due by Thursday, and can be made by calling (219) 757-7212.
“We want this event to be a break from the stresses of being diagnosed or living with breast cancer. My goal is for these women to have a truly enjoyable experience and understand that there is a network of people here that really care about them,” said Oncology Research Coordinator Marie Bates in a written news release. The event focuses on physical and mental health, and offering attendees services related to skin care, massage, fitness, and much more.
Breast cancer survivor Donna Dolniak will speak. Diagnosed with breast cancer Feb. 20, 2002, Dolniak fought cancer while coping with the death of her mother. Celebrating her second chance at life, Dolniak and her husband have adopted two special needs children from Poland. Tyler, 7, came to them with a fetal alcohol background and Adrianna, 5, has cerebral palsy.
Dolniak has also become active with the American Cancer Society as a member Survivor Cultivation Committee and as a team member in the Relay for Life. Most recently, she spoke at the society’s Corporate Kick Off Breakfast for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, where the entire audience embraced her and her story.
Also, Lilly Oncology on Canvas, an art exhibition honoring the journeys traveled by millions of people affected by cancer worldwide, will be on display during Spring Spa Day. The exhibit will also be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, with approximately 30 pieces of art on display.
Lilly Oncology on Canvas was created in 2004 by Eli Lilly and Company and is a biennial competition that invites people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, health care providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.
“This is our second year providing this event, and we hope it continues to grow. Last year we received an overwhelmingly positive response from patients, vendors, and volunteers," said Bates.
