Breast cancer survivors, patients: Get pampered
By Viva staff report | Sunday, April 20, 2008
Breast cancer survivor Donna Dolniak will be the keynote speaker at Spring Spa Day, an event made possible through the efforts of the oncology services department at Methodist Hospitals and support through the Pink Ribbon Society. Spring Spa Day provides an opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to be "educated and pampered."
This year's event will be held April 26 at Methodist Hospitals' Center for Advanced Clinical Studies from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Spring Spa Day focuses on physical and mental health, and gives attendees and opportunity to pamper themselves with services related to skin care, massage, fitness and more.
"We want this event to be a break from the stresses of being diagnosed or living with breast cancer," said Marie Bates, oncology research coordinator. "My goal is for these women to have a truly enjoyable experience, and understand that there is a network of people here that really care about them."
Dolniak's story began on Feb. 20, 2002, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In addition to fighting breast cancer, Dolniak and her husband have adopted two special needs children from Poland. Seven-year-old Tyler came to them with a fetal alcohol background and 5-year-old Adrianna has cerebral palsy.
Dolniak is a member of the American Cancer Society's Survivor Cultivation Committee and participates in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life as a team member for Ella's Pride.
Most recently, Dolniak was a speaker at the American Cancer Society's Corporate Kick Off Breakfast for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer where an entire audience embraced her and her story of becoming a breast cancer survivor.
This marks the second year Methodist has hosted the Spring Spa Day, and the hope is that it will continue to grow.
"Last year we received an overwhelmingly positive response from everyone who attended the event (including patients, vendors, and volunteers), Bates said.
