Diabetes

November 7, 2006
Methodist Hospitals Diabetes Center
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. There are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.
Methodist Hospitals strongly believes in the education of Diabetes Management for individuals who have been diagnosed with this condition. Our program is accredited and received Education Recognition through the American Diabetes Association. Our two full time Diabetes Educators, Rose Flinchum, RN and Sherri Horvat, RN and our Registered Dietician, Pam Nagel are all Certified Diabetes Educators through the National Certification Board for Diabetes Education.

Methodist Hospitals Diabetes Educators Contribute to Published Patient Care Guide

Rose Flinchum, RN and Sherri Horvat, RN recently wrote chapters for the nationally published book, Diabetes Mellitus: A Guide to Patient Care. The book is a practical guide to diabetes mellitus covering the entire spectrum of disease management wherever health care professionals encounter the disorder, including hospitals, clinics and physician offices. Rose and Sherri are also both members of the Professional section of the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the local chapter of AADE called Northwestern Indiana Association of Diabetes Educators (NIADE).

Diabetes Education Program

An individual must be referred by their physician to qualify for the Diabetes Education Program. Once a referral is received from your physician, a one hour appointment is scheduled. At this initial appointment our Diabetes Educators will do an in-depth assessment of the individual as it relates to their diabetes. The full program consists of 12 hours of education. The Diabetes Center offers classes at a variety of days and times for your convenience. The center offers classes for both Pre-existing Diabetes and gestational diabetes. All patients have the additional benefit of scheduling a one on one appointment with the dietician to cultivate a healthy eating plan for themselves.

Methodist Hospitals Diabetes and Education Fair – Saturday, November 11, 2006

The Diabetes Center also offers monthly Diabetes Education and Support classes at no additional charge. The center also offers special events and speakers throughout the year. Methodist Hospitals Third Annual Health and Information Fair for Diabetes is scheduled for November 11, 2006 at Methodist’s Midlake Campus from 9 am to 12 pm. It is open to anyone with diabetes, and there is no charge to attend.  In April, the Center charters a bus and all current patients are given the opportunity to travel to Navy Pier for the Annual Diabetes Expo. The program also brings physician speakers to discuss various subjects concerning Diabetes.
