High school students spent a day in the life of a nurse

On Thursday, March 2, 2006, 182 high school students from a 6 county area are participated in the "Day in the Life of a Nurse" job shadow program. These students will shadow a nurse to gain a one-on-one personal perspective of the profession of registered nursing. At Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillville, 35 students will shadow nurses in rehab, pediatrics, emergency, and labor/delivery units.

Methodist Hospitals participates in the Nursing 2000 program, which is dedicated to building and sustaining the registered nurse workforce for the northern part of Indiana.

The "Day in the Life of a Nurse" experience provides high school students a view into the future of being a registered nurse. According to the programs Executive Director Kim Genovese, more than 80% of the graduating seniors who participated in this program last year have enrolled in a school of nursing.

Not only in northern Indiana, but the nation is concerned about unprecedented shortage of registered nurses that is occurring and predicted to intensify by 2010. This program is a strategy to continue to expose students to the rewarding career of registered nursing.

"Nursing is the infrastructure of the health care industry. The registered nurse is an integral part of the collaborative team that provides care to the clients, according to Genovese. "This profession requires an individual that is a critical thinker, highly skilled, caring, compassionate and knowledgeable."
