Volunteers on a mission from God

After a hospital stay in May, Nancy Kelly decided to volunteer at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, helping patients with their meals by setting up their trays, cutting their food and passing the time with friendly conversation.

"You can't expect the nurses to do everything," she says.

During her hospital stay, she noticed how busy the nurses were. She knew they had a lot of responsibility and thought about the ways nurses could be helped that would also improve the patients’ level of satisfaction.

“While I was in the hospital, the Lord spoke to me in the middle of the night. He told me to get some people together and do this. He gave me the names of the people to call,” Nancy said.

She has recruited six volunteers and every person she called to help said yes.

The volunteers, all new to the Methodist Hospitals Auxiliary, went through the hospital’s physical and orientation process and the program began at the end of October on 5 West.

Nancy says so far the patients and the nursing staff really seem to appreciate their efforts.

“We are doing something to help people,” Nancy explained. “Sometimes the patients really need assistance, but sometimes they just want someone to talk to.”

Verda Daniels, Director of Volunteer Services, is happy to have the new additions and hopes others will be motivated to volunteer following Nancy’s example.

Nancy agrees. “I’m glad I’m doing this and I’m going to keep working at it. The good Lord gave me this idea and I’m going to keep trying to fulfill it.” She added, “I hope it makes other people feel like volunteering.”
