Thanks to state funding, Methodist was able to invest a total of just over $36 million in patient care technology in 2008.

Methodist Hospitals Welcomes New Executives
Michael Davenport, M.D. was appointed to Chief Medical Officer/Vice President of Medical Affairs on March 9, 2009. Dr. Davenport is a physician executive who has operated in the CMO/VP role for the past 12 years at Advocate Trinity Hospital, an urban safety-net community hospital located in Chicago. Dr. Davenport earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University with a pre-med concentration. He then went on to graduate from the University of Illinois Medical School as a Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Davenport completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Daffodils Save Lives
Daffodil Days, one of the American Cancer Society’s oldest fundraisers, is in full bloom at Methodist Hospitals. Oncology Services championed the Daffodil Days fundraiser and quickly shared their enthusiasm with the rest of the hospital. Elizabeth Sengupta, MD, Robert Woodburn, MD and Barat Barai, MD generously contributed to the fundraiser. Employees purchased five dollar stickers to wear blue jeans on February 13th; the money was donated to buy daffodils for all Oncology inpatients and outpatients.

Creative Fundraising Raises Money for the March of Dimes
"It was a team effort!" Stated Neonatal Intensive Care nurse Jill Biggs, when asked about the success of their cookbook fundraiser. The entire perinatal services including; Labor & Deliver, Post Partem, Nursery and Pediatrics contributed to the cookbook that was sold to raise funds for the March of Dimes. The idea, spearheaded by Marcia Ohalloran, nurse on the post parum unit, features over 600 recipes collected by the staff. The cookbook was so popular they quickly sold out of their first printing and ordered more. "We are hoping to sell the rest of the books by the day of the March for Babies Walk on April 26th." stated Jill Biggs.

Over 200 employees and their guest attended the banquet celebration, held at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville on Thursday, February 26.

Methodist Hospitals School of Nursing welcomed its first class in 1923 and graduated its last group of nurses in 1967. Made possible by alumni and supported by the Methodist Hospitals, the Nursing Museum helps showcase the evolution of healthcare and the nursing profession during the past eight decades. Due to the diligence of the nursing alumni, this project has finally come to fruition.

Denise Dillard is the recipient of the 2008 Community Leadership Award presented by Covering Kids and Families of Indiana. She is the Vice President of Government & External Affairs with Methodist Hospitals in Gary, Indiana. Ms. Dillard has been a staunch supporter of Covering Kids & Families of Lake County for several years. Most recently, she has demonstrated her support by committing to develop and implement a plan of enrolling 10,000 Hoosiers in Lake County into Hoosier Healthwise and the Healthy Indiana Plan. Methodist Hospitals provides enrollment assistance and on site enrollment through their Financial Services Department.

Visitors Can Learn the Importance of Colorectal Cancer Prevention
The Super Colon, an 8-foot tall, 20-foot long replica of a human colon, is headed to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus, March 19 - 20, 2008, as part of the Colon Cancer Awareness Event, Scope It Out, on March 19. The event includes 2 physician seminars and colon cancer risk assessments. The event starts at 5 pm, with the physician seminars starting at 6 pm. The Super Colon zigzags across the country serving as an educational tool to teach the importance of colorectal cancer screening. Following a rigorous on-site evaluation, the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Commission on Cancer has granted the Cancer Program three-year accreditation, in recognition of the services provided and quality afforded. This accreditation comes with an even higher distinction of "Accreditation with Commendation", collecting nine out of a possible nine commendations for the program's commitment to excellence.
