Scoring Above the Rest
U.S. News & World Report scored Methodist Hospitals higher than all other NWI hospitals in 8 categories of service.
Merrillville/Gary - Indiana
Each year, for the past 20 years, U.S. News & World Report
releases its findings for the top hospitals in the United States.
This year, Methodist Hospitals scored higher than all other NWI
hospitals in 8 of the 12 categories that largely use care based data
to establish score. The 8 categories are: Neurology & Neurosurgery;
Diabetes & Endocrine disorders; Urology; Digestive disorders;
Cancer; Ear, Nose & Throat; Kidney disorders; and Gynecology.
“The US News & World Report scores reflect our progress and
commitment towards becoming the leader in subspecialty care in
Northwest Indiana. This is a testament to the hard work and
dedication of our physicians, nurses and employees,” stated Ian
McFadden, CEO/President, Methodist Hospitals.
The U.S. News & World Report determined the scores for each
hospital based on a predetermined methodology. Care based data
largely established the scores for 12 of the 16 categories of care.
U.S. News & World Report states that, “To be a candidate for these
specialties, a hospital first had to meet any one of three criteria:
be a teaching hospital, have at least 200 beds, or have at least 100
beds and at least four out of eight important medical technologies,
such as current-generation CT scanners and precision radiation
therapies. This year, 44 percent of all hospitals met that test.”
Following a fulfillment of these requirements, hospitals then had to
show a minimum number of Medicare inpatient discharges for certain
procedures and conditions in 2005, 2006, and 2007 or the hospitals
must have been nominated by a at least one physician in U.S. News
surveys in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Upon meeting these requirements,
hospitals are then eligible to receive a score from 0 to 100 based
on reputation, death rate, patient safety, and care-related factors
such as nursing and patient services.
Reputation made up 32.5 percent of the scores. To determine
reputation, a random sample of 200 physicians from a national
database is selected for each of 12 specialties. These doctors are
then asked to list five hospitals which they consider to be among
the best in their specialty for difficult cases. Cost and location
are not considered in making these lists.
Another 32.5 percent of the scores are based on a mortality
index. The mortality index illustrates the hospitals ability to keep
patients alive. This statistic represents a comparison between the
number of deaths within 30 days of admission in 2005, 2006, and 2007
with the number of deaths that would have been expected given the
severity of each patient's illness. Once these statistics are
compared, an index number is assigned to each hospital. An index
above 1.00 means the hospital did worse than expected; below 1.00,
better than expected. Other care-related factors comprised an
additional 30 percent of the score. These factors include nurse
staffing, technology, and other care-related information. 5 percent
more of the score is based on a patient safety index. The patient
safety index describes how well a hospital minimizes harm to
patients.
Once all of these variables are taken into account, a score is
determined and assigned for each eligible hospital in the applicable
specialties of care.
