2 Methodist Hospitals health workers off to Haiti to help
By Chelsea Schneider 648-3072 cschneider@post-trib.com
Two Methodist Hospitals health
care workers are part of a team
that leaves today for Haiti to
give medical attention to those
impacted by the earthquake.
Dr. Nicholas Johnson will
join physician assistant Johanne
Theodule, a Haitian American, on
the weeklong trip organized by
Hospitals for Humanity. The Red
Cross estimates nearly a third
of the country's population is
in need of medical attention.
Theodule's parents are from
Haiti, and she felt compelled to
go on the trip because she's
fluent in Creole and French.
"I'm used to seeing a lot of
trauma and gory things,"Theodule
said. "I'm planning on seeing a
lot worse. I'm expecting dead
bodies and the stench in the
air. People just lost and
needing help. I'm expecting the
worst and anything better than
that I'm considering a luxury."
Many of Theodule's relatives
are still in Haiti but survived
the earthquake. She's heard the
team will go to an area of
Port-au-Prince that rescuers
have been unable to touch.
She joins Johnson in her
desire to help those suffering
in the natural disaster-torn
country.
"Being in the ER in Gary
prepares me for a lot of
horrible things,"Johnson
said. "I'm probably better
suited than most people to go in
this type of situation."
The Hospitals for Humanity
team will meet in Miami today
and then take a chartered flight
to Haiti.
