The 99-year-old Gary resident's devotion to others has helped him become a nominee for the annual Drum Major Award, which is presented by the Gary Frontiers Service Club.

The Gary SouthShore RailCats have named Alan Bowman as director of group sales and Nikki Kimbrough as assistant manager of merchandise and community relations. Bowman was the Director of Ticket Sales for the Bowling Green Hot Rods and is a graduate of Valparaiso High School. Kimbrough, a Gary native, was part of the RailCats internship program in 2009 before being hired as full-time employee.

Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary is attempting to become a Level 2 trauma center. Becoming certified by the American College of Surgeons for that level of care means having an operating room promptly available and an on-call staff response time of 15 minutes.

Region seeks new teaching hospital with trauma center

The first stages of planning have begun for building a new teaching hospital and trauma center in the region.

State Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, secured about $3 million in the state budget last year to go toward architecture and engineering plans for the facility. He has been meeting with a local task force to talk about building a new hospital at Gary's South Gleason Park Golf Course, across the street from Indiana University Northwest's medical school.

During intensive care and trauma rotations, he puts in 27-hour shifts every four days.
