Gary, Indiana – March 6, 2012 Methodist Hospitals today announced that it has opened an inpatient Geriatric Behavioral Health Services program at its Northlake campus in Gary, Indiana. “We believe it is important for Methodist Hospitals to demonstrate its commitment to the mental and emotional health of the communities we serve by providing top quality behavioral health care to patients of all ages,” said Marcus Wigutow, M.D, Medical Director of Geriatric Behavioral Health Services at Methodist. “Most emotional illnesses in older people are treatable, especially if dealt with early. The Geriatric Behavioral Health Program at Methodist Hospitals is designed to ensure that seniors in our community have access to the most appropriate care, delivered in a warm, supportive atmosphere.”

The new 14- bed unit will complement the existing adult and adolescent inpatient behavioral health units at the Northlake campus and will provide treatment and services tailored to the needs of people aged 55 and older. The Methodist team of psychiatrists, nurses, and trained counselors and social workers first provide a thorough mental and physical evaluation to determine the cause or causes of the psychiatric problem and to assess the level of care needed. Inpatient treatment includes individual and group therapy tailored to individual emotional, physical and medication needs, as well as management of patients’ secondary medical needs. The team also works with patients and their families to develop appropriate aftercare plans.

“National statistics show that one in four older adults suffers from serious emotional difficulties related to aging. The launch of this program is one more example of our commitment to being the leader in specialty care in Northwest Indiana.” said Ian E. McFadden, President and CEO of Methodist Hospitals.
